Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) involves removing only the offending edge of the ingrown toenail and is the most common surgical approach. It leaves the majority of the healthy nail intact for aesthetic purposes. Total Nail Avulsion (TNA) is the complete removal of the toenail and is usually reserved for severely deformed, thickened, or entirely infected nails. A chemical matrixectomy (using phenol) is often applied in both cases to the removed section to prevent the problematic nail from ever growing back.
