The nails can be affected by various species of fungus. However the one which is most common among all is the trichophyton rubrum. These funguses usually have an effect to the skin along with the nails.
- The ways fungus affects the nails:
If the infection which is found in one nail is not treated with due care then there is a huge chance for the fungus to spread to the nails which is present in the other fingers or toes. In few cases the method which can be used as home remedies will be sufficient but in few others the treatment should be undergone to rectify the fungal disease formed. Thus treatment for fungal nail infection is very important.
- Begins at the nail tips and penetrate inside the nail:
This is the very common infection which is caused to the nails. It is known as distal subungual onychomycosis. Usually the major of the fungus which is in the nail is due to this. These are very common on toes rather than the fingers. Generally it begins on the big toe in the area that is discoloured at the edge and slowly penetrates on the way to the cuticle. This will lead to a flaky and thickened toe nail. In few scenarios you can notice peeling of skin in between toes or the athlete’s foot.
- Yeast onychomycosis:
This type of infection is formed due to the candida yeast. This is mostly found in the nails present in the fingers and this will be one of the most common reasons for fungus in the fingernails. Due to the candida on nails it may cause the nails to change to brown, white or yellow in colour and the nails become thickened. Few of the patients who suffer from this type of infection may also have yeast which is found in their mouth or have some other issues which cause infections due to the yeast like the chronic paronychia.
- Commences at the nail base and raises up:
This type of infection is known as proximal subungual onychomycosis. This is a fungal which is not very common in forming fungal infection in nail. This is more like the distal subungual onychomycosis. The only difference is that this infection generally starts at the cuticle and lands up to the tip of the nail by spreading slowly. This is a type of fungal infection which is caused mostly to the people who have the immune system damaged.
